Month: December

Territory: Saint John & Southwestern New Brunswick

Years In Business: Opened July 2015

What career background did you have before A Buyer’s Choice?
I worked as a commercial fisherman for 15 years and also worked as a passenger ferry deckhand for five years. I also served as a municipal councilor for the village of Grand Manan for four years.

How does your background qualify you for A Buyer’s Choice?
Through my work as a fisherman and municipal councilor, I have learned a great deal about having a strong work ethic, dependability and being a clear communicator.

Why did you pick A Buyer’s Choice?
After my partner and I purchased a new home without a home inspection, we saw firsthand there was a strong need for this service in our area. I researched online and came across A Buyer’s Choice Home Inspections; I really liked the brand and what it stands for.

How does your community benefit from A Buyer’s Choice?
As active members of the community, we love helping our friends and neighbors make healthier choices for their homes. We know the local construction methods and problem areas and can better communicate to clients what they have and what to look for.

What kind of support have you gotten from A Buyer’s Choice?
From day one, our regional owner Rick Mayuk has been there 24/7. I have found that all ABCHI franchise owners are extremely helpful.

What has been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge is being new to the market. It takes time, continuity and persistence to get clients, as well as to develop long-lasting relationships with local realtors.

Can you share a word of wisdom for people looking into A Buyer’s Choice/franchising?
Be prepared to dedicate yourself to it. The more time you put in, the faster you will reach success.

Jennifer Colwell & Kory Kohuch

Month: November

Territory: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan & surrounding communities

Years In Business: Opened June 2012

What career background did you have before A Buyer’s Choice?
Jennifer has a background in customer service management and banking, and Kory has been a small business owner for many years (heavy construction, liquor stores, sports bar, concrete counter tops).

How does your career qualify you for A Buyer’s Choice?
Being a previous small business owner is a real asset, so it was very positive to already have that knowledge of how to run the administrative side of the business. From there on, we were able to put our full attentions toward doing inspections.

Why did you pick A Buyer’s Choice?
A friend who had already purchased a franchise a year earlier referred us. We knew that he was satisfied with his decision and it sealed the deal for us!

What kind of support have you gotten from A Buyer’s Choice?
Being a part of the bigger ABCHI family is a huge benefit. We can confer with any of the other inspectors on issues that might need a second opinion or on something that maybe we’ve never encountered before. Everyone works together. Having a good regional owner that is there to offer guidance is important too.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
By then, we hope to have at least doubled the number of inspections we do yearly. We are in the process of adding independent contractors to our team, so hopefully that will contribute to a very steadily increasing workflow.

Can you share a word of wisdom for people looking into A Buyer’s Choice/franchising?
You get out what you put in. You can be as busy as you want.

Month: October

Territory: Midwest Canada

What career background did you have before A Buyer’s Choice?
Prior to joining ABCHI, I worked in office equipment sales. I am now the regional developer for Midwest Canada with 25 franchisees.

How did your career qualify you for A Buyer’s Choice?
I was working largely in sales and marketing, both of which are incredibly important to running a business.

Why did you pick A Buyer’s Choice?
I liked the Master Franchise model – it was certainly the most comprehensive business model I found because it provides reliable revenue for the Master Franchise owner as well as the opportunity to create a team concept with individual unit partners. I also liked that there was, and continue to be, opportunities for me to help our with local ongoing support and mentorship of the franchise parters in my area.

What kind of support have you gotten from A Buyer’s Choice?
A system that works has been the biggest gift. It’s incredibly intimidating to start a business from the ground up – A Buyer’s Choice takes a lot of the guesswork out of launching a business and helps set your mind at ease.

What has been your biggest challenge?
Finding people whose values and work ethics are aligned with mine has proven challenging. I have a great team now!

Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I see myself in a larger territory with a few team leads and hopefully planning retirement.

Can you share a word of wisdom for people looking into A Buyer’s Choice/franchising?
Don’t be afraid of leaving the bi-weekly pay check to follow your dreams – it will just hold you down.

Dave Johnson

Month: September

Franchisee(s): Dave Johnson

Territory: Lone Tree, Colorado

Years In Business: Opened February 2012

What career background did you have before A Buyer’s Choice?
I spent 25 years working in sales with Weyerhaeuser, a wholesale building material distribution.

Why did you pick A Buyer’s Choice?
I appreciated the value of the brand and the importance that its marketing strategy plays in the ongoing success of the model.

How does your community benefit from A Buyer’s Choice?
They are getting a professional company that provides the very best in customer service. We help keep their homes safe.

What kind of support have you gotten from A Buyer’s Choice?
Opening a business with all the details covered was the best guidance I could get. I knew I could inspect a home, but I had no idea what was involved in setting up my business. The training boot camp was very thorough and valuable.

What has been your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge has been developing marketing strategies around continuous growth.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I would like to be managing the business of 5 to 10 independent contractors with occasional inspecting, but spending most of my time on marketing.

Can you share a word of wisdom for people looking in A Buyer’s Choice/franchising?
Understand the commitment need to build your own brand. Not only from the beginning, but as an ongoing process.

How does your background make you qualified for A Buyer's Choice?
I've held sales-related positions before and was the coordinator of a recreation renovation project. I also worked with emergency medical services on an ambulance for 10 years and have 15 year's experience in management of service. I am proud to be one of ABCHI's top performing franchisees!

Why did you pick A Buyer’s Choice?
I consider myself a "people" person who is driven to provide excellent customer service. When examining potential franchises, I picked A Buyer's Choice because of the tremendous marketing support and excellent opportunities for growth and business success.

How does your community benefit from A Buyer’s Choice?
Our locations are involved with a local charity, Families First. It is the go-to group for many different projects that deal with families and very close to my heart.

What kind of support have you gotten from A Buyer’s Choice?
Across the board, support from the home office has been very good. I have especially benefited from the recent software and administrative platform changes - A Buyer's Choice has made it easy for us to transition to these improved technology systems without stress.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I anticipate having a team of six to eight subcontractors working in my territory. Maybe I'll finally have time to golf and promote ABCHI among the golf course crowd!

Can you share a word of wisdom for people looking into A Buyer’s Choice/franchising?
Working hard and being committed to the job makes the work not really work, but just a great thing you get to do and make money!

How does your background make you qualified for A Buyer’s Choice?
As a former teacher and contractor, my unique skill set is perfect to have the needed knowledge to inspect a home and, equally important, the communication skills to properly relay the information.

I currently work with Johnson County disabilities homes to identify areas of potential repair for grants and improvements.

Glenda Black

Month: May

Franchisee(s): Glenda Black

Territory: A Buyer’s Choice Home Inspections of Airdrie – Airdrie, Cochrane, Calgary North

Years in Business: Opened January 2013

What career background did you have before A Buyer’s Choice?
Senior Revenue Analyst with WestJet Airlines and a successful realtor for more than a decade.

How does your background qualify you for ABCHI?
As a Revenue Analyst you need to pay attention to detail, which is highly important as a home inspector, and also understand the revenue/cost of operations to have an understanding of business. As a realtor, it helps to have knowledge of the real estate industry and how the home inspection process is included. My background also includes building six of my own homes and doing various renovations for clients over the years. While I didn’t have any specific home inspection experience, the training provided as well as my background in real estate made the process easy to learn.

Why did you pick ABCHI?
I felt the initial start-up was less time consuming compared to starting up on my own. The technical part of the business such as a website was already established, the brand/image was already created compared to me starting on my own. I feel I am able to operate ABCHI as my own business even though it is a franchise. ABCHI enables me to operate how I want to represent myself and my vision of business.

What kind of support have you gotten from ABCHI?
When we are involved in community events, we have access to advertising materials, which is extremely useful. Additionally, when we need to leave town for an emergency or vacation, we have other ABCHI inspectors cover our business as needed, franchise training and advertising.

What has been your biggest challenge?
The first year of business I think is the biggest challenge - creating the awareness of the service we offer and everything that is included in that service and making initial contact and earning the business of realtors and clients.

Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years, based on my goals, I hope to have a team of 5-7 home inspectors so that I am able to focus only on the marketing and managing the business, rather than performing the home inspections. This would also allow me to create jobs in my community.

Month: April

Franchisee(s): Pedro Giorgana

Territory: Whitby, Ontario

Years in Business: Opened March 2012

Why franchising?
I was tired of working for someone else and wanted to go into business for myself.

What were you doing before A Buyer’s Choice?
I’m from Mexico – I moved to Canada in 2003 and, since then, had been working in restaurants and construction for years. I didn’t see a lot of opportunity in either of those fields. In Mexico, I worked in hotels and restaurants as well. While this background doesn’t necessarily lead directly to the home inspection business, the skills I learned – customer service, hard work, management – have all served me well at ABCHI.

Why did you pick A Buyer’s Choice?
The way the business is run is superb. It suited my needs well – a medium-size franchise that does its research and finds a territory without much competition. The proven system works and the training program helped me jump feet-first into business ownership. I felt supported by Bill and the executive team on every level from day one.

Can you share a word of wisdom for people looking into A Buyer’s Choice/franchising?
I love what I do, and the way to success is to keep trying, never stop learning and always push forward; any business, no matter what it is, will required dedication and follow up, ABCHI has a system that works if you follow the system and get to it.

Rene & Carmen Timmermans

TERRITORY: Duncan, BC & Surrounding Areas

YEARS IN BUSINESS: Opened October 2014

WHY DID YOU PICK A BUYER'S CHOICE?
The team at ABCHI took the stress and pressure of starting a new business from the ground up away from us. They also have a respected name, and a true vision for the growth and success of the company.

HOW DOES YOUR BACKGROUND MAKE QUALIFIED FOR A BUYER'S CHOICE?
We have been small business owners since 1997, and have worked in construction and plumbing. We understand what goes into making a house a comfortable and safe home.

The support is incredible... it seems like the entire A Buyer's Choice team is at your disposal when you need them.

HOW DOES YOUR COMMUNITY BENEFIT FROM A BUYER'S CHOICE?
As active members of the community, we love helping our friends and neighbours make healthier choices for their homes. Our area has a lot of humidity, and we understand how to keep homes safe from the problems associate with that moisture.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
When we signed with A Buyer's Choice, we moved from Alberta to Vancouver Island. It was challenging to not only start a new territory, but to also grow the business with no existing network. However, all the hard work was very worthwhile and we've enjoyed growing our network here.

WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT HAVE YOU GOTTEN FROM A BUYER'S CHOIE?
The support is incredible - whether it's phone calls, emails, or the regular conversation we have with Dave, our regional owner, or the other franchise partners, it seems like the entire A Buyer's Choice team is at your disposal when you need them.
