Ken’s journey from a small-town life in Powell River to running a successful home inspection business has been one of resilience and dedication. He grew up on the Sunshine Coast, later moving to Burnaby before finally settling with his family in Chilliwack in the summer of 2009. “Our first house was in Chilliwack,” Ken recalls. “I was a new dad, just married, and working as a lumber grader at a local mill when I got injured. I needed a way to support my family, and that’s when I came across ABCHI.”
Having recently had his own home inspected, Ken saw the appeal of the industry and thought, *I could do that.* With no background in business, Ken applied to join ABCHI and met with the regional leader, who recognized his commitment and potential. Determined to take the leap, Ken financed the franchise investment and started doing inspections on weekends. “I’d work at the mill during the week and spend weekends on inspections and at open houses. I threw everything I had into it,” he said.
Ken’s grit paid off—he completed over 150 inspections in his first year, earning the trust of Chilliwack Realtors and building his business from the ground up. In a time when social media marketing was barely a concept, he relied on the strength of his work, brokerage visits and word of mouth. Reflecting on the journey, Ken shared, “I didn’t know how to run a business, but I knew I could put my heart into it and followed the ABCHI system and guidance. Now, fifteen years later, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come.”
Beyond the growth of his Chilliwack franchise, Ken’s recent move to expand into Abbotsford, Mission and Hope marks a new chapter. With an emphasis on mentorship, Ken is eager to support new sub-franchisees in the Fraser Valley. His focus on team building and client relationships has been central to his business model, and he’s excited to extend these values to others. “Being your own boss is a game-changer. It’s allowed me to build a business I’m proud of while spending quality time with my family, whether we’re out fishing, traveling, or exploring in our Jeep,” Ken explains. “I’m excited to help others experience that same freedom and satisfaction.”
This expansion allows Ken to offer a unique mentorship opportunity to aspiring entrepreneurs throughout the Fraser Valley.
